Star Persona

' A star is an image; not a real person, that is constructed from a range of materials'
- Richard Dyer

By materials he means media materials, things like film, celeb shows, television interviews, magazine covers, radio, adverts and of course music videos. This suggests a difference between a star, and the real person underneath it all. A star is constructed by the record label with all of these materials to help them sell records, it doesnt necessarily represent the real person.

'Stars represent the cultural hegomonic 'ideal' either conforming to it or challenging it'
'Celebrity magazines are all about how stars compare to the ideal & how we compare to the stars'
-Richard Dyer

This emphasises the importance that stars have in todays society, how they are seen as role models and the 'ideal' In most magazine the stars are photographed in an outfit, and then a list of places where you can get the same thing suggesting that this is what you should look like and if you dont you are not the 'ideal' women. A star can dress the way they want following the season trends often starting them, or challenging them for example lady gaga, and that is why she stands out.
